    Cooperative autonomous agents form coalitions in order ro share and combine resources and services to efficiently respond to market demands. With the variety of resources and services provided online today, there is a need for stable and flexible techniques to support the automation of agent coalition formation in this context. This paper describes an approach to the problem based on fuzzy coalitions. Compared with a classic cooperative game with crisp coalitions (where each agent is a full member of exactly one coalition), an agent can participate in multiple coalitions with varying degrees of involvement. This gives the agent more freedom and flexibility, allowing them to make full use of their resources, thus maximising utility, even if only comparatively small coalitions are formed. An important aspect of our approach is that the agents can control and bound the risk caused by the possible failure or default of some partner agents by spreading their involvement in diverse coalitions

    Bounded Delay and Concurrency for Earliest Query Answering

    International audienceEarliest query answering is needed for streaming XML processing with optimal memory management. We study the feasibility of earliest query answering for node selection queries. Tractable queries are distinguished by a bounded number of concurrently alive answer candidates at every time point, and a bounded delay for node selection. We show that both properties are decidable in polynomial time for queries defined by deterministic automata for unranked trees. Our results are obtained by reduction to the bounded valuedness problem for recognizable relations between unranked trees

    Minimizing Tree Automata for Unranked Trees

    International audienceAutomata for unranked trees form a foundation for XML schemas, querying and pattern languages. We study the problem of efficiently minimizing such automata. We start with the unranked tree automata (UTAs) that are standard in database theory, assuming bottom-up determinism and that horizontal recursion is represented by deterministic finite automata. We show that minimal UTAs in that class are not unique and that minimization is NP-hard. We then study more recent automata classes that do allow for polynomial time minimization. Among those, we show that bottom-up deterministic stepwise tree automata yield the most succinct representations

    Population ecology of Psammobates oculifer in a semi-arid environment

    We studied the ecology of Psammobates oculifer over 13 months near Kimberley, South Africa, to ascertain if the population’s life history traits conform to chelonian patterns in arid environments. Capture rates were highest in spring and lowest in winter when environmental conditions were respectively most and least favourable for tortoise activity. Body condition did not change from autumn to spring, but reached lower values during the summer drought. Capture effort averaged 5 hours/tortoise, which corresponds closely to that of species with low population densities in arid regions. Population size structure was skewed towards adults, indicative of low recruitment and/or low juvenile survivorship. Females were larger and heavier than males, confirming sexual dimorphism in this species. Body size of cohorts scaled to annuli counts, indicating a close correspondence between body size and age. Telemetered adults deposited one or no growth ring in the year of study; consequently, annuli counts could underestimate adult age. Regression analyses showed that male and female growth rates did not differ, but males matured at a smaller size and younger age than females. The smallest male showing reproductive behaviour had 12 annuli and a shell volume of 157 cm3, while similar measures for females were 14 annuli and 185 cm3. The sex ratio of the population did not differ from 1:1 but the bias towards males in spring, and towards females in autumn, indicates that studies limited to particular seasons can misrepresent life history traits of populations.     Dipolar interactions and anisotropic magnetoresistance in metallic granular systems

    We revisit the theory of magnetoresistance for a system of nanoscopic magnetic granules in metallic matrix. Using a simple model for the spin dependent perturbation potential of the granules, we solve Boltzmann equation for the spin dependent components of the non equilibrium electronic distribution function. For typical values of the geometric parameters in granular systems, we find a peculiar structure of the distribution function of conduction electrons, which is at variance with the two-current model of conduction in inhomogeneous systems. Our treatment explicitly includes the effects of dipolar correlations yielding a magnetoresistance ratio which contains, in addition to the term proportional to the square of uniform magnetization (), a weak anisotropic contribution depending on the angle between electric and magnetic fields, and arising from the anisotropic character of dipolar interactions.Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures, accepted in PR

    NMR and Mossbauer study of spin dynamics and electronic structure of Fe{2+x}V{1-x}Al and Fe2VGa

    In order to assess the magnetic ordering process in Fe2VAl and the related material Fe2VGa, we have carried out nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and Mossbauer studies. 27Al NMR relaxation measurements covered the temperature range 4 -- 500 K in Fe(2+x)V(1-x)Al samples. We found a peak in the NMR spin-lattice relaxation rate, 27T1^-1, corresponding to the magnetic transitions in each of these samples. These peaks appear at 125 K, 17 K, and 165 K for x = 0.10, 0, and - 0.05 respectively, and we connect these features with critical slowing down of the localized antisite defects. Mossbauer measurements for Fe2VAl and Fe2VGa showed lines with no hyperfine splitting, and isomer shifts nearly identical to those of the corresponding sites in Fe3Al and Fe3Ga, respectively. We show that a model in which local band filling leads to magnetic regions in the samples, in addition to the localized antisite defects, can account for the observed magnetic ordering behavior.Comment: 5 pages, 3 figure
